VICE CHANCELLOR’S REPORT

Presented by Professor Kenneth Romines

Bless the Lord, O my soul:

And all that is within me, bless his holy name.

Bless the Lord, O my soul,

And forget not all his benefits. (Psalm 103:1-2)

We give praise, honour, and glory to the Most High God Jehovah.

On behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Vili Vailea Saulala, I wish to acknowledge Lord Vaha’i, our Guest of Honour; Honourable Tu’ilokomana Tuita and other nobility of the Tongan Crown.

To the President of the Tokaikolo Christian Church, and also the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Christ’s University in Pacific – Rev. Nesiasi Kolo, who has joined us from Australia.  And also to the leaders of the Tokaikolo Church here in the United States and abroad, and the members of the Church, we praise God for this wonderful day He has made.

To the parents and families of the graduates, and special acknowledgements to the graduands of 2021.

History

In 2003, Lavengamalie Christian University (LCU) was registered in San Francisco, California; and a branch was started in Tonga in 2004 by late Founder and Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Dr. Liufau Vailea Saulala. The Tonga campus awarded Associate of Arts degrees starting in 2005, and through a Tokaikolo Christian Church-funded scholarship, LCU began sending students to Pensacola Christian College (PCC) in Florida, to complete their undergraduate degrees in their chosen fields of study. An additional opportunity for students opened-up at Patten University, here in Oakland, in 2007, to pursue studies first degrees and I was the Vice-President for Academic Affairs during this time. These students returned to Tonga to teach at the Church schools, and others returned abroad to pursue careers. One of them is the current Vice-Chancellor of CUP and the CUP Administrator in America, William Fe’aomoeata. This venture became very costly for the Church, and by 2010, LCU was able to award her first under-graduate degrees.

Name Change

In 2014, the Board of Governors approved a proposal from the Founder, Dr. Saulala, to change the name from LCU to Christ’s University in Pacific (CUP), to coincide with his vision that a Bible-based and Christ-centred education was pivotal at CUP. This was already being practiced in the pre-school, elementary, and high school education systems of the Church. And the desire was to infiltrate the same principles in tertiary education. The name change in itself was a bold statement, to take up the Name that has stood the test of time.

In 2016, His Majesty King Tupou VI, the King of Tonga, became the Chancellor of the University, to this day. CUP is very fortunate to exist in a Christian nation, with a Christian monarch.

CUP has been blessed through partnerships with other international institutions. In 2019, Professor Michael Adams  and Dr. John Wheeler of Faith International University travelled to Tonga to sign an MOU with the late Founder, Rev. Dr. Liufau V. Saulala. This was the last MOU he signed before passing away in November 19th, 2020.  This MOU was a platform for collaboration through exchange of students and staff and recognition of programmes of study, which has been greatly hindered by the Covid-19 pandemic. In December 2019, CUP awarded the Honorary Doctor of Divinity to the Chancellor, His Majesty King Tupou VI, King of Tonga. And I was fortunate to be the Guest Speaker.

The Online Studies was initiated in the United States in 2019. It started with 17 students. In the past few years, successful candidates travelled to Tonga to receive their awards. In 2020, CUP deferred their graduation ceremony to this year due to Covid-19. In 2021, CUP opened an administrative office at 735 Green Street, E. Palo Alto, California – the very location where LCU was registered in 2003.

Today marks a historical moment, and although most aptly attributable to the global pandemic, we are marking a monumental milestone for CUP, to hold the first commencement ceremony in America and second internationally to the graduation ceremony in New Zealand in 2019. A similar event will also take place in Auckland, New Zealand on December 17th, and in Sydney, Australia on December 28th of this year. Tonga’s graduation ceremony is deferred to July 2022 because of new regulations pertaining to mandated vaccinations, despite it still being Covid-free.

Today’s graduates are from the School of Theology and Apologetics, completing a range of programmes from Certificates, Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas, and Bachelor awards. The recipients have been studying for a period of 1, 2, 3, and 4 years, consecutively. Teaching and Learning in these programmes are conducted in the Tongan language; and was made available for training of Church workers, and those who were interested in learning more about the Bible.

As Christians, we believe the events playing out today are accounted for by prophecy recorded more than two thousand years ago. Education at CUP does not only focus on the discipline, in this case the Bible, but also on ascertaining that learners affirm their Salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ.  That is indeed our highest call, to make disciples, and to glorify His Holy Name.

Malo ‘aupito  (Thank you very much).
